Romance Scams Are Getting Worse: How to Spot Pig-Butchering, Fake Identities and Money Traps When Dating Online — Learn the Tactics to Protect Yourself — A Love Advisor Explains

Romance scams are not something that only happens to "stupid people"

"I never thought I'd be the one to get scammed." — almost every romance scam victim has said this exact sentence. You might think scammers only target the lonely, the naive, or the greedy, and that it has nothing to do with you. But the reality is that victims of romance scams (also known as "pig-butchering") are very often well-educated, ordinary people with proper jobs — even professionals. What scammers target isn't your intelligence, it's your emotional needs.

Why are romance scams so hard to defend against? Because they attack the most basic and vulnerable part of being human: the need to be loved, to be understood, to find someone who genuinely cares about you. When you meet someone on a dating app on a lonely night, and they chat with you every day, care about you, and remember every little thing you've said — it's very hard to immediately think "this person is a scammer".

This article aims to help you understand one thing clearly: how many kinds of romance scams there are, how each one works, which stage you're currently in, and what to do at each step. If you're dating online, or you suspect the person you're talking to doesn't feel right, this article will give you a lot of clarity. And of course, if you're already troubled and want someone to help you analyze whether this person is genuine, a professional love advisor can also help.

First things first: which kind of romance scam are you dealing with?

"Romance scam" isn't a single tactic — it's a whole category. Different tactics have different goals, different pacing, and require different defenses. Figure out which one you're facing before deciding how to respond.

① "Pig-butchering" investment fraud (most common, biggest losses)

How it works: The scammer first builds a romantic relationship with you ("fattening the pig"). Once the relationship is stable and you fully trust them, they slowly guide you into "investing" — cryptocurrency, forex, online gambling, or some professional-sounding investment product. The first few times might genuinely earn you money (they might even let you withdraw it), and once you've put in a big amount, everything vanishes — the person and the money both disappear ("slaughtering the pig").

How to spot it: The biggest red flag is this — someone you've never met in person (or only on video) is eagerly teaching you how to invest and make money. A genuine love interest won't rush to talk to you about "getting rich together". If the investment they describe is "guaranteed profit" and they pressure you not to "miss this opportunity", it's almost certainly pig-butchering.

② The "urgent money" scam

How it works: The scammer borrows money from you using all kinds of excuses — "my family member is critically ill", "my business is short of cash", "I got into an accident and need compensation", "I need money to change my flight". Usually the amount starts small and grows: first they borrow a few hundred or a thousand (and always pay you back on time) to build "credit", then they borrow a huge sum and vanish.

How to spot it: Someone who genuinely likes and respects you — especially someone you've never met or haven't known long — will rarely ask to borrow money. Because asking you for money is itself an awkward, hurtful thing. If they ask for money "right after you two started", no matter how pitiful the excuse, be on guard immediately.

③ The "fake identity" scam (catfishing)

How it works: The scammer steals other people's photos and identities — pretending to be a professional, a soldier, an overseas businessman, a model, even a celebrity. They use a "perfect" persona to attract you: good-looking, successful, gentle and caring, but always with a pile of excuses for why they can't meet you (working abroad, on a military base, in quarantine).

How to spot it: Photos that are too good-looking, a background that's too perfect, but never being able to meet in person, and video calls that always have an excuse ("my camera is broken", "the network is bad here") — these are all classic catfish traits. There's also a very practical trick: run their photos through a Google reverse image search, and you'll often find the same photo appearing online under different people's names.

④ The "sugar daddy / gifts" scam

How it works: The scammer poses as a rich person or big boss who says they want to "take care of you" and send you expensive gifts, but you first have to pay "processing fees", "customs duties", or "deposits". Or the reverse — they play pitiful and coax you into sending them money and gifts.

How to spot it: Any situation where you have to pay money before receiving anything is a scam. Genuinely wealthy people won't ask you to pay first before sending you a gift.

⑤ The "nudes / extortion" scam (sextortion)

How it works: The scammer coaxes you into sending intimate photos or nudes, then uses them to blackmail you — "if you don't pay, I'll send these to your family, friends and colleagues". This kind of scam is especially vicious because victims often stay silent out of shame and sink deeper and deeper.

How to spot / respond: With this one, remember: don't pay. Pay once and they'll demand a second time, then a third — it never ends. The right move is to stop replying, keep the evidence, and report to the police (Hong Kong police have dedicated units for these cases).

Second: understand "why did I fall for it" — the psychology

Once you know the tactics, you need to understand a deeper question: why do such smart people fall for it? Because romance scams exploit not your judgment, but a few fundamental psychological mechanisms of human nature.

① Emotional need (loneliness, craving to be loved)

This is the most fundamental one. When you've been single for a long time, just went through a breakup, or are under a lot of life stress and feel lonely, your need to "be loved" and "be cared for" becomes especially strong. Scammers specifically show up at these moments, using intense care, daily greetings and sweet words to fill the emotional void in your life. You're not stupid — you're just "too in need" — and that need makes you not want to doubt the person in front of you.

② Confirmation bias (only believing what you want to believe)

Once you've invested emotionally, you tend to believe "this person is genuine", and automatically ignore or even rationalize suspicious signals ("maybe his camera really did break", "he must have a good reason to borrow money"). This is called confirmation bias — you only notice evidence that supports your conclusion and ignore evidence against it.

③ Sunk cost (the more you've invested, the harder it is to walk away)

This is the most vicious part of pig-butchering. Once you've invested a lot of time, emotion, and even money, you can't bear to "admit defeat" — because admitting defeat means accepting that everything you invested was wasted. The result is that instead of walking away, you invest even more, hoping to "win it back". This is exactly what the scammer wants.

④ The appeal of an "authoritative / perfect" persona

A scammer's persona is usually very "perfect" — tall, rich and handsome, beautiful, successful, gentle and caring. That "perfection" is itself a warning sign. Because in reality, no one is perfect. A person who is "perfect to the point of being unreal" is very likely fake to begin with.

Third: figure out which stage you're in — different stages need different responses

This is the most practical part. Romance scams don't "take your money right away" — it's a process. Depending on which stage you're in, what you need to do is completely different.

Stage 1: You've just met someone online and hit it off, but haven't invested much yet

Your situation: You like them, but your feelings haven't deepened yet, and you haven't given any money.

What to do: This is the "best time to defend". Do the following:

  • Reverse image search their photos to see if they've been stolen.
  • Ask for a video call — a genuine person won't refuse, a scammer always has an excuse.
  • Check whether the background they describe (job, address, social circle) has contradictions.
  • Don't rush to invest too much emotion — give it time to observe.
  • The iron rule: before you've met in person, never send money under any circumstances.

Stage 2: You've invested emotionally, and even started to feel "this is the one", but haven't sent money yet

Your situation: You've fallen for them, chat every day, and even started imagining a future together. This is when your judgment is at its weakest, because emotions have taken over.

What to do: The most important thing at this stage is to "get someone to check your blind spots". Tell a friend or family member you trust about the whole situation — outsiders see clearly, and they'll very likely spot the problem at a glance. If it's hard to tell people around you, talking to a professional love advisor is also a great option, because they'll analyze the person in front of you from an objective angle.

  • Ask yourself: does this person often have "sudden emergencies" that need money?
  • Ask yourself: do they avoid meeting in person or video calls?
  • Ask yourself: is their backstory "too good", too good to be true?

Stage 3: They start asking you for money (whether borrowing, investing, or any other reason)

Your situation: This is the key turning point. They ask for money, no matter how reasonable or pitiful the reason.

What to do: At this moment, switch to "rational mode". Remember one line: a person who genuinely loves you won't ask for your money before building a real, in-person relationship. No matter how moving their words are, do these two things first:

  • Stop all money dealings — don't send another dollar.
  • Tell someone you trust about the whole situation and hear their view.

If you've already sent money, don't stay silent out of shame — silence is exactly what the scammer wants. What you need to do is stop immediately, keep the evidence, and consider reporting to the police.

Stage 4: You've already sent money and only now realized you were scammed

Your situation: You've lost money and even your emotional investment, and right now you're shocked, ashamed and blaming yourself.

What to do: First, understand one thing: this is not your fault. A scammed person is a victim of the scammer, not a "stupid person". Scammers are professionally trained, with complete scripts and teams — their entire job is to deceive people. You fell for it because you have "humanity and feelings", not because you're "stupid".

  • Stop all contact immediately, and don't keep talking to the scammer (they'll keep coaxing you, and may even return with a new identity).
  • Keep all evidence: chat records, transfer records, their account details, photos.
  • Report to the police immediately. Hong Kong police have an "Anti-Deception Coordination Centre" (ADCC) dedicated to these cases.
  • Contact your bank to see if funds can be frozen or recovered.
  • Take care of your emotions: being scammed is a major trauma, don't carry it alone. Talk to someone you trust, and if needed seek professional help (counselling, or a love advisor).

How to date online safely — a practical checklist

Romance scams are scary, but you don't need to "throw the baby out with the bathwater" and give up on meeting people online. As long as you remember these principles, you can date online safely:

① No money before meeting in person

This is the iron rule. Before you've met in real life and built a real relationship, don't send money for any reason, any amount, or any purpose (borrowing, investing, fees, gifts).

② Video call as soon as possible

A person who genuinely wants to get to know you won't refuse video. Video not only confirms "it's really them", but also lets you see their reactions and environment. If they keep making excuses not to video call, be careful.

③ Reverse image search their photos

Use Google reverse image search or TinEye to upload their photos and see if they appear elsewhere or have been stolen.

④ Verify their background — don't just take their word for it

They say they're a doctor, lawyer, soldier or businessman — you can verify that. Search on LinkedIn, company websites, even Google, and see if this person actually exists.

⑤ Take it slow, don't rush

A scammer's trait is "fast" — sweet talk comes fast, "you're the love of my life" comes fast, and they quickly guide you into investing. Real feelings take time. If someone is rushing you into investing emotion or money, that itself is a warning sign.

⑥ Share with others, don't keep it to yourself

Scammers love to "isolate" you — making you not tell your friends and family, making you make decisions alone. Because the moment you ask someone else, it's easy to get exposed. So keep in touch with friends and family, and share your online dating experiences with people you trust — that's the best protection.

If you or someone around you suspects a romance scam

Finally, I want to share a very important message: being scammed in romance is not something shameful — it's something that takes courage to face. Scammers exploit the best parts of human nature — trust, love, and giving. The fact that you fell for it means you "have heart and feelings", and those are not weaknesses.

If you suspect that you or someone around you is facing a romance scam, don't carry it alone. You can turn to friends, family, the police, or talk to a professional love advisor. A love advisor can not only help you analyze whether the person in front of you is genuine, but can also give you a safe space to talk and heal when you're hurt.

LoveWise's love advisors are always here to talk with you — whether you want to confirm whether this person is a problem, or you've already been scammed and need someone to talk to, we're here. Remember, the first step to protecting yourself is not facing it alone 💕

(Catfishing)

(Sextortion)
