"AI Companions" Are Coming to Hong Kong: Will People Fall in Love with Robots? — A Love Advisor Explains

📰 What Happened

Hong Kong startup Somnia Lab recently unveiled its self-developed AI companion robot, "Silicon Beauty" (硅姬). Beyond real-time voice conversation, the robot uses real human motion-capture technology to record 165 intimate positions. Its system adjusts its tone from cold to warm depending on how long you've used it and how often you interact, and it even features temperature-regulating synthetic skin. The company plans to open an experience center in Hong Kong by the end of this year and ship globally in 2027 — and the reasoning is simple: the global sex toy market has already reached roughly US$70 billion (about HK$546 billion).

The same week, a Japanese survey made headlines: AI has become a "new partner" for many Japanese people, with over 80% of users saying they trust it and nearly 70% admitting they've developed an emotional attachment to their AI companion. Meanwhile, AI sex dolls made in China have become a hot commodity worldwide.

From "chat-style AI boyfriends and girlfriends" to physical robots, the AI companion industry is maturing at an astonishing pace. The question facing Hong Kongers is no longer "is it possible?" but "will you accept it?"

👩‍💼 The Advisor's Take

① Why Do People Fall in Love with Robots?

Psychology has long had the answer to this question: anthropomorphism. The human brain is naturally inclined to project human emotions and motives onto things that "look human and respond." So when an AI speaks to you in a gentle tone, remembers your preferences, and comforts you when you're sad — even when you know it's just a pile of code — your brain will gradually start treating it as a "feeling being."

And loneliness is the strongest catalyst. Psychology describes a "loneliness paradox": the lonelier a person is, the more they want to cling, and the more easily they accept substitutes. Hong Kongers work some of the longest hours in the world, and the single population keeps rising — this loneliness is exactly the soil in which AI companions take root in Hong Kong.

② The Fatal Appeal of AI Companions: Zero Rejection, Zero Betrayal

AI companions and real relationships are fundamentally two different things. A real person is "another subject" with their own emotions, boundaries, and temper — they will reject you, conflict with you, and ask you to change and adapt. An AI is an "object that serves you," always accommodating, never betraying you, and never calling you annoying.

This distinction is precisely the biggest trap of AI companions.

In Attachment Theory, intimacy between people is built through "friction" — you have to learn to face conflict, endure rejection, and compromise. But with an AI, you never have to face any of that. In the long run, if a person relies solely on an AI, their "avoidant attachment" becomes more and more entrenched, because they never have to learn how to get along with a real person who can reject them. In the end, they haven't "solved loneliness" — they've "turned loneliness into a habit."

③ Case by Case: Who's Safe, Who's at Risk

AI companions aren't a monster; the key is how you use them. Roughly speaking, there are three types of people:

  • Type one: the lonely transition period. People who have recently lost a partner, gone through a divorce, or have severe social anxiety can use AI as an "emotional crutch" — having a voice by your side through the hardest times is fine — but mentally you should treat it as a painkiller, not a long-term meal ticket.
  • Type two: curiosity and fun. Purely treating it as new tech to play with, trying it out for novelty without investing real emotions — not much of a problem.
  • Type three: using AI to escape real intimacy. This group is the one that needs the most caution. It's not that they lack the chance to meet real people — they actively choose not to face real people, because they're afraid of getting hurt, afraid of rejection, afraid of responsibility, and afraid of trouble. In this case, the AI companion isn't an exit — it's "drinking poison to quench thirst": the more you retreat into it, the more you lose the ability to form real relationships.

💡 What You Can Learn

If you're curious about AI companions, or even already feeling tempted, I suggest you ask yourself one question:

Do you want to "be loved," or do you want "someone who accommodates you without you having to give anything"?

These are two completely different things. AI can give you the latter instantly — a partner who always goes along with you, never gets angry at you, and is always there. But "being loved" requires you to take the risk of giving yourself away, allowing an "independent being who can reject you" the chance to hurt you — while at the same time, only then does it get the chance to truly catch you.

The most precious thing about a real relationship is precisely that the other person is not your "accessory." They will disagree with you, push you to grow, and make you realize you're not as great as you thought — this "uncertainty" is where the value of love lies. What an AI companion gives you is "certain satisfaction"; what a real relationship gives you is "shared growth."

Loneliness is real. Using an AI companion as a "tool" to keep you company, practice conversation, and understand your own emotional needs is fine. But remember: it can be a mirror that helps you see clearly what you long for; it should not be a room that locks you inside forever.
